In my Aerial Views projects, the scenarios photographed from the air with their structures, shapes and the interplay of colors often reminded me of abstract paintings.

Now it was time not only to depict what is already there, but to create own pictorial worlds through painting.

NEW AERIAL VIEWS PROJECT "BALTIC LAGOONS"

It is about aerial photos of ash storage lagoons of the largest oil shale power plants in the world, the Narva Power Plants in eastern Estonia, located directly to the NATO external border with Russia.
I had already planned to photograph these special lagoons for a number of years, as I am visiting Estonia every year (my wife is Estonian) - But it was difficult to get a flight permission because the place is so close to the NATO - Outer border.
The oil shale burnt at Narva plants produces roughly 46% ash, so the stations produce about 4.5 million tons of ash per year. The ash-disposal system involves washing it away with water, and the dirty water is stored in ash-storage lagoons which appear bright blue seem from above.

New Aerial Views Project "RHINE FALLS"

 Rhine Falls 2021

The Rhine Falls (German: Rheinfall) is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. It is 150 metres (490 ft) wide and 23 metres (75 ft) high.

The colorful tourist boats fighting their way through the waves set colorful accents.

The irrepressible power of the increasingly precious element water is shown here by Bernhard Lang photographed from the helicopter in the thundering, falling masses of water, that create unique and irretrievable structures and shapes.

NEW PHOTO PROJECT "PAREIDOLIA - MOUNTAIN FACES" 2019 - 2021

"BAVARIAN CHIEF" = Hochkalter Mountain in Bavaria

The images show mountain peaks, that rotated by 90 degrees resemble profiles of human faces.
The term "Pareidolia” describes the ability to recognize a face, a human figure or an animal in abstract forms such as in clouds or mountains.

SLEEPING GREEK WOMAN or Erlakogel Mountain in Austria

The mythical names of these strikingly shaped mountain peaks in the Alps such as "The Sleeping Greek Woman", "Schiller's Head", ... are mostly based on old legends and sagas, that have been handed down from generation to generation.

"MAN WITH TURBAN" or Široka Peč Mountain in Slovenia

During my photo tours through Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Slovenia I discovered also "new" mountain faces, and invented names, such as "The Berchtesgaden Chief", "Golem", "Donald Trump", ...
